Projet Summary

The objective of the project is to develop a technological platform for poorly soluble active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), using two model molecules. The platform has the potential to enable the development of innovative products with improved safety and/or efficacy profiles compared to existing therapies for dry eye disease, as well as innovative services with strong potential for innovation at both EU and global markets.

The project encompasses development activities from TRL 2 to TRL 8. It is implemented within the NUTS 2 Adriatic Croatia region and contributes to the goal RSO 1.1: Development and strengthening of research capacities. The project is part of the thematic area "Health" and the priority niche “FuturePharma – Pharmaceuticals of the Future,” aligning with the Smart Specialisation Strategy and the thematic priority area “Personalised Health Care,” while meeting all mandatory indicators of the Call.

Project Objectives and Expected Results

The project aims to enhance the availability and effectiveness of treatments for dry eye disease by developing an innovative technological platform for formulations containing poorly soluble APIs. The goal is to research and develop advanced, improved formulations with the potential to provide better drug penetration, longer ocular retention, enhanced tolerability, and optimised delivery of the active substance.

The project includes activities in industrial research, experimental development and financial feasibility assessment.

Project Outcomes

  • Development of an innovative pharmaceutical platform for formulating poorly soluble APIs
  • Development of formulation candidates for the treatment of dry eye disease
  • Successful completion of industrial research to develop advanced formulations with improved characteristics compared to currently available therapies
  • Establishment of continued collaborative partnerships between industrial and academic stakeholders to strengthen research capacities and support internationalisation of research
  • Preparation and submission of intellectual property protection applications (patents and industrial designs) to ensure competitive advantage and commercial sustainability of the developed technologies
